Queen Camilla apparently had some reservations about Prince William marrying Princess Kate, a royal expert claims.

Biographer Christopher Andersen claimed in his new book Kate!: The Courage, Grace, and Power of the Woman Who Will Be Queen (via Page Six) that King Charles III‘s wife, 78, “did object” to William marrying Kate.

“She did not think she was up to snuff, as it were,” the outlet reports the book, which was released last week, stating. “She was below the salt. She had no aristocratic blood.”

The Princess of Wales, 44, was born to parents Michael and Carole Middleton, who worked for British Airways as a flight dispatcher and a flight attendant, respectively. Kate’s mother then founded Party Pieces, a mail-order company supplying party goods.

“People like Camilla didn’t want her because they felt that she was too common to be the wife of a future king,” Andersen reportedly wrote, pointing out that Kate came from “working-class roots.”

Calling Camilla one of Kate’s “fiercest critics” before she married the Prince of Wales, 43, in 2011, Andersen said the queen “was very cognizant of the fact that a future king of England should have, she believed, a marriage to a royal personage, or at least a British aristocrat.”

According to Andersen, via Page Six, Camilla felt that Kate’s mom, Carole, was a “gauche opportunist,” adding that Charles’ wife “knew a schemer when she saw one.”

A source previously told Examiner that Camilla still appears to have strong opinions when it comes to William’s mother-in-law.

“You can instantly see Camilla’s hackles go up anytime Carole walks in the room,” the source said. “Everyone else in the family adores her, including Charles, which a lot of people see as the main reason Camilla doesn’t like her.”

While the source noted that Camilla remains kind in person, they claimed she has privately questioned Carole’s intentions.

“Camilla is polite to her face, but it’s not a secret she thinks she’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” the source alleged. “She’s convinced she’s secretly trying to undermine her, which is the same suspicion she harbors towards Kate.”
