Anthony Hopkins Opens Up About Estrangement From His Only Child, Daughter Abigail: ‘I Did What I Could’

Anthony Hopkins is not in contact with his daughter.

In an interview with the New York Times published on Saturday, October 25, the Silence of the Lambs actor, 87, opened up about how he tried to mend fences with his only child, Abigail Hopkins, whom he shares with his first ex-wife, Petronella Barker, 83. The Emmy Award winner and Barker were married from 1966 to 1972, during which they welcomed Abigail in 1968.

“My wife, Stella [Arroyave], sent an invitation to come and see us. Not a word of response,” the two-time Oscar winner revealed. “So I think, OK, fine. I wish her well, but I’m not going to waste blood over that. If you want to waste your life being in resentment, fine, go ahead. It’s not in my ken. I could carry resentment over the past, but that’s death. You’re not living.”

The Father actor admitted he has not been perfect but is at peace with the situation, feeling he did his best to try to heal the relationship.

“You have to acknowledge one thing: that we are imperfect. We’re not saints. We’re all sinners and saints or whatever we are,” Anthony told the outlet. “We do the best we can. Life is painful. Sometimes people get hurt. Sometimes we get hurt.”

“But you can’t live like that. You have to say, Get over it. And if you can’t get over it, fine, good luck to you,” he continued. “I have no judgment. But I did what I could. So that’s it. That’s all I want to say.”
