In the final chapter of her life, Queen Elizabeth IIwas said to be thinking less about legacy and more about family, and particularly the youngest generation she adored.
New details emerging from a forthcoming biography on the monarch reveal she had a final request to bring her great-grandchildren together one last time.
The monarch reportedly hoped they would all visit her at Balmoral during her final summer, determined to leave them with what one insider described as “a really happy memory.”
Royal biographer Robert Hardman also states in Elizabeth II: In Private. In Public. The Inside Story, which has been reported by the Daily Mail, that the request in 2022 included seeing her grandson Prince Harry’s two children with Meghan Markle.
At the time, family tensions were still running high, particularly involving Harry, 41, and his wife, 44, who had stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and relocated to the United States.

But as per a Page Six report, despite the strain, the Queen remained hopeful that even the Sussexes and their children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 5, could be part of that final gathering.
“The Queen wanted all the great-grandchildren to come up to Balmoral at some point over that summer, even if the Sussexes might not be able to make it,” Hardman writes.
In June 2022, just months before her passing, that wish was partially fulfilled. Harry and Meghan travelled to the UK, where the Queen met Lilibet for the first time ahead of her first birthday.

By then, those close to the monarch say she was increasingly aware of her declining health.
While the palace never disclosed specific medical details, sources in the book suggest she had begun “tying up loose ends” and reflecting on her legacy during the summer.
Elizabeth died on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96, closing the chapter on a historic 70-year reign, but also with a family she had worked hard to keep close.
