The complicated dynamic between Prince Harry and his late grandmother Queen Elizabeth II is coming to light, thanks to a new tell-all about the British royal family.
A new book by writer Hugo Vickers claims the monarch is said to have become extremely guarded and took extra precautions when speaking with her grandson following his royal exit in 2020, including refusing to take his calls without someone else present, Page Six reported.
According to the outlet, Vickers revealed, “Whenever Prince Harry called his grandmother, she asked her lady-in-waiting to stay with her.”
“The distress the Sussexes caused the Queen in the last years of her life cannot be overestimated,” Vickers, who is reportedly also a friend of the British royal family, claimed in Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History,.
After the couple’s headline-making departure — dubbed “Megxit” — and subsequent move to California, the tone of the queen’s exchanges with Harry were described as “monosyllabic,” Page Six reported, citing an insider.
“There were lots of one word answers, ‘yes’ and ‘no,’” the palace insider said.

“The Queen clearly wanted some kind of protection,” the insider continued, adding that her lady-in-waiting remained by her side for “moral support and protection… to ensure there was a record of what was said.”
As Examiner readers know, tensions within the royal family escalated further after the Sussexes’ televised interview in 2021, in which they raised concerns about racism. Their 2021 Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan detailing their experience inside the monarchy added to the tension.
“I think the Queen was also on her guard with Harry because she was so hurt by what he had done,” the insider added, per the outlet.
Vickers also wrote that the queen refused to see Harry and Meghan alone when they brought their daughter, Princess Lilibet, to meet her for the first time in 2022.
“Prince Harry was at [his then-residence] Frogmore Cottage with his wife and two children, the gate adorned with balloons to celebrate baby Lilibet’s first birthday. They visited the Queen with the children, again with a lady-in-waiting present,” Vickers said.

The author further alleged the queen made candid remarks about her grandson to friends. “And now Harry has opted out, and for what? To be a carer for [his son] Archie?” she said, according to Vickers.
The book also reportedly claims Prince Philipreferred to Meghan as “The American.”
Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History is set to be released April 8.
