On Friday, April 17, the London Daily Digital reported that city officials asked the disgraced royal, 66, to relinquish his Freedom of the City of London title, a historic distinction once tied to special privileges within the city.
The honor cannot be taken back once given, which is why the City of London Corporation (CLC) requested that Andrew give up the titles on his own.
“Elected members have today agreed to write to Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor, inviting him to formally relinquish the Freedom,” a spokesperson for the CLC said in a statement to the outlet, adding that they “will consider the response received, if any, at a future meeting and determine what action may be taken.”
The statement continued, “Applications via patrimony are not considered or endorsed by our elected members, and there is no effective legal mechanism to remove this type of Freedom.”

Andrew inherited the honor due to his father, Prince Philip, who was a freeman.
“His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew,” a statement shared by Buckingham Palace read. “Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence.”

The statement went on to add that Andrew had been served a formal notice to surrender his lease at Royal Lodge, and he has since moved to Sandringham Estate.
