When his longtime friend was struggling and behind bars, Hall, now 58, made a point of showing up.
Hall has been giving fans a glimpse into their friendship speaking on the Wednesday, August 19, episode of Danielle Fishel‘s Teen Beat podcast.
“I’ve been there for him. Years ago, when he was in trouble with the law, he spent a little time in the clink — so to speak — I went to visit him. We have a long history together,” the Breakfast Club star explained.
Downey, 61, faced multiple drug-related arrests between 1996 and 2001 before entering a court-ordered rehabilitation program. He has remained sober since 2003 and went on to rebuild his career, eventually becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest stars and winning an Oscar for his role in Oppenheimer.
But when Hall and Downey met, the pair were just starting out in the business. Their friendship dates back to the beginning of their careers.
Hall told Fishel, 45, that he helped the Avengers actor land an audition for Saturday Night Live, leading to his casting on the iconic NBC sketch series in 1985. That same year, the pair appeared together in Weird Science.

Despite the twists and turns that followed, Hall remains proud of his longtime friend and says he remains humble.
“I’m really proud of his success. He’s had just a great career,” he said. “He’s a great guy. Despite all the great success he’s had, he’s very real, very down-to-earth guy. He’s cool.”
The pair previously discussed their friendship on Peacock’s SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night docuseries, released last year.
On the show, the Sixteen Candles star joked that he is still waiting for Downey to repay the favor of getting him his SNL audition which helped lead to so many other big roles.
