This Major Airport Was Just Named the Busiest in the U.S. — and It May Not Be the One You Think

Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport has reclaimed the top spot on the list of busiest airports in America.

According to new FAA data, and per USA Today,  the Windy City hub was the busiest airport in America in 2025, ending Atlanta’s years-long streak and reclaiming a title O’Hare last held in 2019.

Per the outlet, O’Hare recorded 857,392 takeoffs and landings last year, allowing it to edge past Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which had dominated the No. 1 spot since the pandemic.

“From the runways of O’Hare to the neighborhoods across our city, Chicago is building, growing, and leading,” said Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson in a statement. “We are open for business, open to the world, and once again setting the pace for the nation.”

Other airports rounding out the top five include Dallas–Fort Worth, Denver International, and Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International.

O’Hare isn’t slowing down: Per the media statement, a massive $1.3 billion, 19-gate expansion is set to open in late 2028, boosting traffic even further.

Despite being the busiest for air travel, O’Hare didn’t rank as the most stressful. In December 2025, an Australian travel study gave that honor to Newark Liberty International.
