Why King Charles Required a ‘Witness’ to Be Present for Meeting With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

King Charles III reportedly did not want to meet with his son Prince Harry, his wife Meghan Markle, and their children Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, alone.

On Tuesday, July 21, Page Six reported that the sovereign, 77, wanted a “witness” there, which is why he asked Queen Camilla to join the Friday, July 10, meeting at his private home in Gloucestershire, England.

“The queen was there for a reason,” royal writer Robert Jobson told the outlet. “To make sure that everything was witnessed.”

According to the BBC, the Palace described the meeting at Highgrove House as a “private family occasion.”

“The only people who know were inside the room,” Jobson told Page Six, referring to how the moment unfolded. “The question is: Will Harry and Meghan tell the world?”

The public was unsure whether the meeting between the monarch and his grandkids would happen as drama unfolded with Harry’s accommodations for his trip to England.

The palace initially offered to provide royal accommodations for Harry, 41, but on Monday, July 6, his rep said “having formally accepted the accommodation offer, it has now been withdrawn at the last moment,” per Page Six.

However, Buckingham Palace claimed Harry declined the offer on Saturday, then changed his mind that day, but by then it was too difficult to accommodate him, which they told him that night, per the BBC.

The Sussexes have had a rocky relationship with the king since they stepped back from being working royals in 2020. The couple eventually moved to California to start a new life across the pond.
