Steve Martin and Martin Short have very different visions for their golden years, a source tells Examiner.

“Steve came up with Only Murders in the Building very much as something of a farewell project to his own showbiz career, where he could work with his old friends while also nurturing a new generation of comedy stars,” explains the source. “To say it worked like gangbusters is an understatement.”

Martin, 81, and Short’s hit mystery comedy-drama series, which also stars Selena Gomez, has won seven Emmys and received 61 nominations, and recently finished filming its sixth season in London.

“The show continues to be a big hit with critics, audiences and the awards-giving bodies, but Steve is not interested in performing forever and he wants to have a proper retirement once this show concludes,” the source reveals. “Marty is the exact opposite.”

“No matter what opportunities are in front of him, he keeps going and he keeps pushing above and beyond what is asked of him,” the source says of the 76-year-old comedian. “Marty would sign up for ten more seasons of this show if he could.”

But just how many more seasons do they have? Only Murders in the Building hasn’t officially been renewed for a seventh installment, but according to Deadline, the writer’s room will be moving from Los Angeles to New York City.

“It’s still an open question, but Steve just doesn’t have as much gas in the tank as Marty does,” admits the source. “Steve will be happy if they do one more year of the show, but if that’s all they have left together, Marty has no choice but to move onto other projects.”
