Rita Wilson Opens Up About Dark Family Secret Involving Her Father That She ‘Still Can’t Get Over’
Rita Wilson, 69, reveals her late father secretly had a family in Bulgaria before emigrating to the US in 1949, a discovery still haunting her today.
Fourteen years ago, Rita Wilson learned her dad had a hidden family — and the shocking news continues to haunt the actress.
“I still can’t get over that,” she admitted on the How To Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast. “I wish I could have talked to him.” Hassan Halilov Ibrahimoff was already deceased when his famous daughter, now 69, found out he’d secretly lost a wife and son in Bulgaria before emigrating to the United States in 1949. While his spouse, Alice, died in childbirth, their little boy, Emil, was taken by an infection at just 4 months old.
According to Rita, her Greek Orthodox father “never said anything” about the tragedies — despite two of his grandchildren eventually sharing the same birthday as his late son. “My sister’s firstborn child was born on Dec. 26, and my youngest son was born on Dec. 26,” she explained. “And I think of my dad, all of those years, celebrating all those birthdays, and knowing that he had a child born on Dec. 26, Emil, who passed away.”
