Gladys Knight Sparks Fear, Announces She’s ‘Transitioning Into the Next Stage’ Amid Concerning Video

Gladys Knight is calling it a career — at least when it involves hitting the road.

The 82-year-old “Midnight Train to Georgia” legend, currently crisscrossing the country with Smokey Robinson on their Just the Two of Us tour, stunned fans on August 27 with an emotional Instagram announcement that she’s ready to hang up her touring shoes and focus on her family.

Knight told followers she will be “easing into fewer performances” while “transitioning into the next stage” of her life, explaining she wants to spend more time on projects with her husband, William McDowell, and with her ever-growing brood of grandchildren. She thanked fans for standing by her for “three quarters of a century,” closing her message with love and a hope that she’ll still catch their smiling faces “out and about and on the road.”

However, the timing of Knight’s announcement has fans reading between the lines: Just a day earlier, TMZ published a video collage of the singing legend appearing visibly confused mid-performance, reigniting whispers that something more serious than tour fatigue may be going on.

McDowell, 68, who is also her manager, didn’t exactly put those fears to rest. Asked directly about his wife’s health, he offered a carefully worded non-answer.

“No one is ever gonna make me say, ‘My wife is well,’ but all she wants to do is sing,” he said.

Whatever is behind the decision, family has always been Knight’s anchor. Back in 2017, she told Harry Connick Jr. on his show that she and McDowell — her fourth husband, whom she’s been married to since 2001 — were already the proud grandparents of 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, a number that’s likely only grown since.
