Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe didn’t just play tough greasers in the 1983 cult classic “The Outsiders” — they lived the part, spending a terrifying night with real life gang members and surviving to tell the tale!

Legendary director Francis Ford Coppola wanted authenticity from his young stars, so he arranged for the future A-listers to spend a night in a pitch-black cellar with some former greasers. It was method acting, Coppola-style, and it wasn’t for the faint of heart!

Between the darkness, the old furnace and the edgy company, the Hollywood pretty boys were completely on edge.

“They might come down and kill us tonight,” was whispered between the stars more than once.

When the duo wasn’t braving the darkness, they were sparring in the hotel hallway like scrappy rivals. Rob spills, “Tom is like this beast. I hit him real clean and rang his bell. The next thing I knew, I woke up on the floor. He completely knocked me out!”

Turns out, “The Outsiders” wasn’t just a coming-of-age film— it was a crash course in survival, both on-screen and off!
