The 1948 slapstick horror movie “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” was a giant hit at the box office — and a nightmare for everyone else.

Lou Costello hated the script, saying, “My 5 year-old daughter can write something better,” and only agreed to do it for a $50,000 advance on his percentage.

“The real monsters were (Bud) Abbott and Costello,” director Charles Barton later said, citing the dueling duo’s spats. And Boris Karloff, the original Frankenstein’s monster — who was not in the film — only agreed to help with promotion “as long as I don’t have to see the movie.”
