Susan Lucci is opening up about the devastating grief she faced after the death of her husband, Helmut Huber, in her newly released memoir La Lucci.
In the book, Lucci, 79, recalls feeling utterly lost after Huber died at age 84 in March 2022, one month after suffering a stroke. “I believed I had lost my light,” she writes, per UsWeekly, adding that encouragement from others offered little comfort, and that “the only thing I truly hoped for was for Helmut to come walking through the door.”
In the book, the former daytime soap opera star details the frightening days leading up to his death, recalling a phone call in which Huber was slurring his words before being rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery.

Though doctors were initially hopeful, his condition declined and he never regained consciousness.
Married since 1969, the couple shared two children, Liza, 55, and Andres, 36. Lucci writes that she stayed by Huber’s bedside for an entire month, ultimately realizing there was no chance he would recover.
After his death, Lucci says she struggled to imagine life without him.
“For a long time, nothing mattered,” she wrote, per the outlet.
Lucci said writing the memoir, which was released Tuesday, February 3, helped her process the pain.
“I didn’t expect it,” she told the outlet, “but it helped me to heal.”
