Pixar’s ‘Toy Story’ Nearly Fell Apart in Early Development Before Becoming a Beloved Classic

If you think a child’s toy box is a mess, imagine the chaos that surrounded the making of the first animated Toy Story movie!

An early version before its 1995 debut was such a dog that director John Lasseter complained: “It was a story filled with the most unhappy, mean characters that I’ve ever seen!”

That’s because the script was in a constant tug-of-war in an uneasy partnership between Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg and Pixar Animation Studios, which produced the first entirely computer-animated feature film, about toys that come to life when humans aren’t around.
