Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have struck a new deal with Netflix. However, sources tell Examiner that it’s causing a lot of resentment amongst their Hollywood peers, many of whom are upset they’ve been ignored while the royal couple continues to cash in despite them being such divisive figures at the moment.
“Staying with Netflix and continuing to branch out with their streaming productions was the priority for Meghan, Harry and their Archwell production company, but their new deal is notably downsized from their previous one. Plus, it doesn’t have the guarantees in place that they once enjoyed,” says a source. “It would have been a longer and tougher process to negotiate with a new home like Amazon, Apple or HBO, and this way they get to continue to work with the same executives who have been helping them for the last few years.”
The sources explain that Meghan, 44, and Harry, 40, are “generating buckets of bad blood” among more experienced producers and talent who are still waiting for a chance to work on their own projects at Netflix.
“The only thing that can change the status quo for Meghan and Harry is launching a bona fide, unexpected, genuine hit,” the source continues. “They believe they have the taste and the skill to do exactly that, but everybody outside of Netflix is still skeptical. The only way they can make real money out of this new arrangement is with a show that is huge all over the world, and not because people are ‘hate watching it.’”

While it might be a tall order, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex can’t really call their new deal a “win until they actually deliver on what they’re promising.”
“Harry, Meghan and Archwell have a clean slate and new opportunities to pitch and make shows, but they’re also dealing with a ticking clock and Netflix is only going to be patient for so long,” the source concludes. “If they want to prove themselves as producers, they’re going to have to deliver in a way that they haven’t so far.”
