‘Little House on the Prairie’ Alum Melissa Gilbert Passes on the Torch of Iconic Laura Ingalls Role

TV icon Melissa Gilbert is passing the torch as the original Laura Ingalls to Alice Halsey, the new face of the Little House on the Prairie reboot on Netflix.

In revealing her replacement, Melissa made her introduction of Alice on social media, announcing, “Here she is. Please give her a warm welcome to the Little House family!”

Alice may only be 10 years old, but she is an experienced TV veteran. She appeared in five episodes of the 2023 miniseries Lessons in Chemistry and 23 episodes of the show Kindergarten: The Musical. She’s also made guest appearances on Night Court and Days of Our Lives.

And Melissa believes Alice is the perfect choice to take over her role as the “disruptor” Laura.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t think about it and burst into tears,” says Melissa, now 61. “It’s like stepping through a looking glass. There’s a part of me that’s always going to be Laura. I think every girl has a Laura in them.”
