Ethan Hawke Confesses His Heart Was ‘Ripping Open’ During Daughter Maya Hawke’s Wedding

Maya Hawke‘s wedding day was a very special moment for her dad, Ethan Hawke.

During the Oscar-nominated actor’s appearance on the Wednesday, September 16, broadcast of Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, cohosts Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones asked Ethan about his daughter’s Valentine’s Day nuptials.

“I don’t know if you feel this way, but some of the most profound moments of your life are the most common,” Ethan, 55, began. “Your oldest daughter is getting married, you are in a situation that humanity has been doing forever, and yet your heart is ripping open.”

“The mysterious part about it is I thought it would be moving because it would be this great bonding moment between the two of us,” he added. “But the truth is, she is just thinking about the groom.”

Maya married musician Christian Lee Hutson earlier this year in a surprise ceremony in New York City on February 14.

“That’s what’s kind of powerful about it,” the Blue Moon actor continued. “You’re looking backward at this childhood and this time of raising her, and she is looking forward to her life.”

“And it’s appropriate, it’s right,” he said. “It kind of hurts.”

Months after the Stranger Things alum, 28, tied the knot, she told People in May that “it was a wonderful day,” adding that she “probably wouldn’t want to” share much more.

However, Maya added that she was getting a bit of anxiety before walking down the aisle.

“I worried so much about how everyone else’s experience was going to go that I’d worked myself into a total tizzy, and then it happened, and I had a great time, and everyone had a great time,” she explained. “I didn’t need to worry as much as I did.”

“I wasted a lot of energy being so worried,” she admitted.
