Billy Joel says the brain disorder he’s battling “sounds a lot worse than what I’m feeling.”
The 76-year-old “Piano Man” was diagnosed in May with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a buildup of spinal fluid inside the brain. The condition can affect hearing, vision and balance.
“I feel fine,” Billy insists on Bill Maher‘s Club Random podcast. Balance has been his biggest challenge so far – “It’s like being on a boat.”

The condition forced the six-time Grammy winner to cancel his upcoming tour. According to a statement posted to Instagram, his medical issues are connected to recent onstage mishaps, including a nasty fall he took during a February concert. The rocker was spinning a microphone stand before hurling it across the stage – only to fall to the ground.
“What I have is something very few people know about,” Billy says of NPH. “I’m doing my best to recover from it.”
